On
July 6, 2002, the Amy Oberreither Memorial Hockey Game was played
in Wentzville, Missouri, to honor Amy and pay tribute to her outstanding
accomplishments in youth ice hockey; and for the purpose of providing
a forum in which to present the First Annual Amy Oberreither Memorial
Goaltender’s Award. Amy, who died following a car accident
at the age of eighteen, was one of only a handful of girls playing
boys ice hockey in St. Louis in the 1990’s. After playing
three years for North County’s Valley Hockey, Amy was selected
to play for the AAA Amateur Blues, the area’s elite boys
hockey club. In 1995, Amy was honored at the former Kiel Center
by the NHL’s St. Louis Blues and KPLR-TV for having achieved
excellence in amateur hockey. She went on to be the winning goaltender
at the AAA Regional Championships in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1996.
Amy also played for STL Elite, a select tournament team. She earned
the “Number One Star of the Game” in the prestigious
Bell Cup Tournament in Toronto, Ontario, in 1996. While attending
Lutheran High School South, Amy played both Boys Jr. Varsity and
Varsity ice hockey. We have created the Amy Oberreither Memorial Goaltender’s Award: a scholarship given annually to an up-and-coming young goaltender who exemplifies the passion and excitement for goaltending that Amy displayed while “in net” for her youth hockey teams.
